Melaphyre Mine
is an open-pit mine located in Rybnica Leśna. It mines melaphyre – a brittle magma rock formed from volcanic lava that solidified millions of years ago. Melaphyre is used primarily for construction and transportation, including hardening highways and mountain hiking trails (which run through the same mountains that are being destroyed by the mine’s invasive activities). The mine is biting deeper and deeper into the slopes of Bukowiec and Graniczna mountains, irreversibly changing the landscape and microclimate of Sokołowsko.
